Full Throttle Subway is my long running series of experimental photographs shot deep within the subway tunnels of New York City. Shot without permission or regret, this series explores long exposures, speed and motion. The inherit danger of entering these confined underground spaces, and shooting photos within inches of roaring fast 400 ton meat grinders, is not an act for the faint of heart. Factor in the 600 volt third rail at your feet, limited light, and the game of frogger with a tide of speeding stainless steel beasts, and you’ve got perhaps one of the most dangerous environments in all of NYC.
And yet, this is my happy place. Away from society, under it’s feet, probing the underground and exploring the limits of my camera gear and mind….
These specific photos were shot for, and shown in a pandemic-era illegal invitation-only gallery show within an off limits area of one of NYC’s Bridges. Take a moment to look close at the details. What at first might appear to be blurry shots are anything but. These are highly technical shots. All the details are there. These photos are single-exposure, with only the most basic of adjustments in photoshop. The ‘How?’ I like to leave to the imagination, and as inspiration for others to push the limits of what their camera can do.
